Is the OB-6 Editor free?

Yes. It is completely free, has no account, no ads and no analytics. Everything runs locally in your browser.

Does it work with both the OB-6 Keyboard and the Desktop Module?

Yes. Choose Keyboard or Desktop Module in the Settings tab — both share the same voice engine.

Which browsers are supported?

Any browser with the Web MIDI API: Chrome, Edge and Opera on desktop. Firefox and Safari do not support Web MIDI. On iOS a Web MIDI browser app can be used.

How does the editor talk to the OB-6?

Parameter edits are sent as NRPN messages, and complete programs are transferred as Sequential SysEx dumps (packed MS-bit format). Set Param Xmit and Param Rcv to NRPN in the synth's Globals.

Can the editor edit the OB-6 sequencer?

Yes. The 64-step, 6-voice polyphonic sequencer is fully editable: notes and velocities per step and voice, with Play, Record and Transpose sent straight to the instrument's own transport.

Where are my banks stored?

In your browser's IndexedDB storage, on your computer. Nothing is uploaded. You can back up all banks to a JSON file and restore them anywhere.

Can I import existing OB-6 SysEx files?

Yes. Open or drop any .syx file that contains OB-6 program dumps — single patches load straight into the editor, banks are stored in My Banks.

The OB-6 Editor is a free, browser-based patch editor and librarian for the Sequential OB-6 synthesizer designed by Dave Smith and Tom Oberheim, in both keyboard and desktop module versions. It edits every program parameter in real time over MIDI NRPN messages: two voltage-controlled oscillators with continuously variable waveshape, sub octave and noise, the SEM-style two-pole state-variable filter with continuous low-pass to notch to high-pass morphing and band-pass mode, filter and loudness envelopes, LFO with five shapes and six destinations, X-Mod cross modulation with filter envelope and VCO 2 as sources, aftertouch destinations, dual 24-bit effects including bucket-brigade and digital delays, chorus, flangers, phasers, ring modulator and four reverbs, analog distortion, the arpeggiator, and the 64-step 6-voice polyphonic step sequencer with full note and velocity editing plus transport control. The librarian stores banks in the browser, imports and exports standard SysEx files, and can fetch or send complete banks. All 500 factory program names are included for browsing. The editor requires a Web MIDI capable browser such as Chrome, Edge or Opera, works offline as an installable PWA, and never uploads any data. It also provides an on-screen performance keyboard with pitch-bend, modulation and pressure controls, six voice lamps, a favorites system, and a complete NRPN/CC automation reference exportable as CSV.
